We strive to give carefully planned and personalized instruction enabling every student to experience the joy of movement in a creative and positive way. Our dance instructors are experienced professionals who are innovative, motivational, and caring, and believe that every student can enjoy the spirit of dance, regardless of body size or image. A whole child approach permeates the dance studio which has created a family atmosphere full of joy and creativity. Instructors

Meet Our Team

Cindy Joyce is the owner and artistic director of the Patrick County Dancing Arts Center. Ms. Joyce has over 40 years of dance training in teaching, performing and choreography. She has trained with some of the nations’ finest dance artists and worked alongside her mentors and dance teachers Ray Hollingsworth and his wife Cindy, teaching and assisting with them as they toured the country with national dance conventions and seminars. She has continuing dance education from the University of NC in Greensboro, where she enhanced her studies in ballet. She is certified in Creative Movement, Ballet and Tap for Preschool, Primary age children and has completed programs with both Leap ‘N Learn and Danc’eM education programs. She has attended The Dance Teachers summit in New York City and Rhee Gold’s Project Motivate and Business Seminar’s for Dance Teachers worldwide. Ms. Joyce has taught and judged for several dance organizations including Dance Teachers United in MS, and Dance Troupe, Inc. in VA. She was a teacher in the Minds in Motion program developed by the Richmond Ballet for the public-school systems in Martinsville, VA a program which brings dance training to children in 4th – 6th grades of public school. Several of her former students have had professional careers in dance, including performing at Disney World in Orlando, FL. and Kings Dominion in Richmond, VA
Merrill began her dance days here at the Patrick County Dancing Arts Center as a student, and dance assistant. Her love of dance took her to Radford University where she graduated with a degree in dance. While attending Radford Merrill began her professional career at Disney World in Florida where she was a featured singer and dancer. She was also a member of the Bells N’ Beaus a local group in Patrick County. Merrill was a teacher for the Minds in Motion program developed by the Richmond Ballet for the public-school systems in Martinsville, VA – a program which brings dance training to children in the 4th-6th grades of public school. While she is a busy wife and mother of four, Merrill continues to use her talents in various ways through her church and other organizations.
Lisa began dance training at an early age under Ray and Cindy Hollingsworth. She has studied dance across the country with many of our nation’s leading dance educators. She performed as one of the Hollingsworth professional group dancers in many community and state events. Under Teresa McGee’s instruction, Lisa won many Baton Championships and titles. After graduation she became a principal teacher for the Ray Hollingsworth Studio of Dance in Martinsville, VA and Jamestown, NC. After several years of teaching Lisa began her professional career in Reno, NV and Las Vegas, NV. Lisa is married and the mother of three. The Studio is pleased once again to have Lisa on staff for the Patrick County Dancing Arts Center.
Cari has been a part of the Patrick County Dancing Arts Center since starting her dance training at a young age, she was a part of their competition dance companies that won multiple high achievement awards. Cari is studying Early Childhood Development in college and is currently working alongside her mother at County Kiddos in Home Daycare. Cari is the mother of one and loves working with young children. The studio is delighted to have Cari as a teacher for our Creative Movement and Ballet Classes for the very young as well as our Acrobatic Dance Classes.

Ballet and Creative Movement

Age 3-4

Class Details

A class for preschoolers containing ballet and creative movement. Dancers will learn basic steps and terminology in ballet and explore their own creative movement styles using imaginative music and games in a safe, positive environment. Dancers in this class will improve flexibility and coordination through fun, age-appropriate movement, and exercises. Our instructors use imagination games, upbeat age-appropriate music, and props to inspire and excite students about dance. Students will also work on classroom skills such as following directions, listening, and working with others. This class is as enjoyable as it is beneficial!

Ballet and Tap

Age PreK and Kindergarten

Class Details

During this class, comprised of ballet, creative movement and tap dancers are introduced to more formal dance technique. This class will lay the foundation for correct, safe, and successful dancing in years to follow. Students will expand on the basic steps and terminology from the 3–4-Year-Old Class in ballet and continue to explore their own creative movement in a safe, positive environment. Along with the introduction of more skills and techniques, instructors continue to foster creativity and imagination in class through movement and imagination games, the use of props, and activity songs. Dancers in this class will improve flexibility and coordination through fun, age-appropriate movement, and exercises.

Ballet, Jazz and Tap

Age 1st-4th Grade

Class Details

This dynamic class introduces the young dancer to ballet sequences and the basic steps of jazz and tap. For the ballet portion of this class, students will learn classical technique while memorizing body positions and vocabulary. With a focus on proper alignment, careful balance, and precise coordination, the exercises will physically promote strength and flexibility, while mentally promoting artistry, musicality, and grace. Our jazz classes teach basic jazz dance technique, terminology, and style with an emphasis on proper technique, alignment, and movement quality. Our tap classes stress the basics of tap while also teaching musicality and rhythm. This class is loads of fun, and perfect for dancers who want to do it all!

Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Tap

Age 4th-5th Grade

Class Details

This dynamic class continues to explore ballet sequences and the basic to intermediate steps of jazz and tap. For the ballet portion of this class, students will learn classical technique while memorizing body positions and vocabulary. With a focus on proper alignment, careful balance, and precise coordination, the exercises will physically promote strength and flexibility, while mentally promoting artistry, musicality, and grace. Our jazz classes teach basic jazz dance technique, terminology, and style with an emphasis on proper technique, alignment, and movement quality. Our tap classes stress the basics of tap while also teaching musicality and rhythm. Our Hip Hop dancers develop focus, strength, and agility while having fun. This class is loads of fun, and perfect for dancers who want to do it all!

Age 6th Grade and Up

Class Details

This dynamic class continues to explore ballet sequences and the intermediate-advanced steps of jazz and tap. For the ballet portion of this class, students will learn classical technique while memorizing body positions and vocabulary. With a focus on proper alignment, careful balance, and precise coordination, the exercises will physically promote strength and flexibility, while mentally promoting artistry, musicality, and grace. Lyrical is a fusion of ballet and jazz, with expressive motions that tell a story. Students will learn lyrical technique along with how to express emotion through movement. Jazz classes teach intermediate jazz dance technique, terminology, and style with an emphasis on proper technique, alignment, and movement quality. Our tap classes stress the basics of tap while also teaching musicality and rhythm. Our Hip Hop dancers develop focus, strength, and agility while having fun. This class is loads of fun, and perfect for dancers who want to do it all!

Acrobatic Dance 101

Age 6-12

Class Details

New This year is Acrobatic Dance, or Acro as it is commonly referred to by dancers and dance professionals, is the beautiful fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements.

Class Details

We offer jazz and tap for adult students as well stretch and flexibility. Our adults enjoy the socialization while learning to dance and obtaining an effective workout.
